Lautaro Martinez blames a ‘referee’s mistake’ for Inter’s loss to Liverpool

Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez has spoken out about the team’s loss to Liverpool in the Champions League, attributing the defeat to a ‘referee’s mistake’.

The Nerazzurri were beaten 1-0 at San Siro, with a controversial penalty awarded to Liverpool after a VAR review.

Lautaro told Italian outlets, “We are disappointed but not angry. Because if you lose due to a referee’s mistake, there’s not much you can do. We’re upset that we threw everything away because of an injustice.” He added, “If penalties were given for every shirt pull, the game would never be played.”

The Inter captain also reflected on the team’s past struggles, including their 5-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League. However, he remains optimistic about the team’s progress under new coach, stating, “We started again. Maybe some results haven’t been positive, but it takes time. There’s a new coach who is giving us a lot of energy.”

Lautaro emphasized that the team is improving day by day, saying, “Maybe it’s not visible from the outside, but we know we are improving day by day.” He also revealed that he has been seeing a psychologist to help him stay balanced and focused.

The Inter captain explained, “I understood that if someone attacks me, it’s often because they would like to be in my place. When I was young, I used to struggle with reading or hearing harsh words about me. Now I face them with more calm, and I enjoy my career.”

Despite the setback, Lautaro remains confident in the team’s abilities, saying, “I get really angry when I lose, but I also have to consider the quality of the opponent. We will keep working and improving, and we will come back stronger.”
