Xavi Simons scored in Spurs’ 3-0 win over Slavia Prague and he is aiming to build his own legacy in the number seven shirt once worn by Son Heung-min.
Xavi Simons marked the return of Son Heung-min to Tottenham with a goal in the number seven shirt, signaling his intention to build his own legacy at the club.
The Dutch attacking midfielder scored a late penalty in Spurs’ 3-0 Champions League win over Slavia Prague, following his impressive display in last weekend’s win over Brentford.
Simons, a £52 million summer signing from RB Leipzig, has been in excellent form, scoring three goals in his last two appearances for Spurs. He praised Son’s legacy at the club, saying it’s a “real pleasure for me to take this number and build my own legacy”.
Son Heung-min bid farewell to the Spurs faithful after a decade of service, with a mural depicting him unveiled on the Tottenham High Road. He addressed a crowd of 47,821, saying “I will always be Spurs”, and thanked fans for their support.
Simons spoke about his meeting with Son, saying “I didn’t meet Son personally before, and now a little bit. He is a big legend for the club, and it’s a real pleasure for me to take this number and build my own legacy”.
Mathys Tel, who joined Spurs’ Champions League squad as an injury replacement, praised Son’s support, saying “Sonny is like my big brother… He is always texting me, his support is always behind me”.
Simons’ goal was a key moment in Spurs’ win, and he expressed his delight at scoring in the number seven shirt. “It’s really nice to score the goals, but feeling great on the pitch, that is the most important for me, and I’m enjoying it,” he said.
