Hummels Announces Plan To Retire From Football in the Summer

German defender Mats Hummels has announced he will be retiring from football when the season ends. The 36 year old defender who currently plays for AS Roma is widely remembered for his heroics at Borussia Dortmund during 14 year stay at the club.

Hummels played most of his career in the bundesliga where he first featured for Bayern before going on loan to Dortmund. The loan deal became permanent but after 8 years, he was signed by Bayern Munich for a 5 year period after which he returned to Borussia Dortmund.

His stellar career has seen him make a total of 668 appearances scoring 49 goals and accumulating 28 assists. 

Hummels is a one-time World cup winner having won the trophy with the German National Team in 2014. His other honors include six German Super Cups, four DFB-Pokal and six Bundesliga titles.

Three of his German Super Cups came from his time at Borussia Dortmund while four of his Bundesliga honors came from his time at rival club Bayern Munich.

The much experienced defender featured in Dortmund’s 2-0 UCL final loss to Real Madrid. This painful defeat came at the end of his time at Dortmund before he made the switch to the Serie A.

Hummels is known for his physicality and defensive leadership, which he has shown throughout his career. He has recorded just 3 red cards in his playing days and accumulated 54 yellow cards in the process.

For Bundesliga and German fans, Hummels is retiring as a legend of the game. On his day, he is one the best defenders to have played in the Bundesliga and he is retiring with a legacy that has been etched into the sands of time.
