Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer remains undecided on extending his contract beyond 2026, while supporting Jonas Urbig as his potential successor.

Manuel Neuer is taking his time deciding on his future with Bayern Munich, stating he’s in no rush to extend his contract beyond 2026.

The veteran goalkeeper, who turns 40 in March, is prioritizing his health and performance, saying, “It’s really about the moment, about asking, okay, how is my body doing? What’s happening with my health? Does it make sense to continue?”

Neuer’s uncertainty comes as Bayern has identified Jonas Urbig, 22, as his likely successor. Urbig has already shown promise, featuring three times for Bayern this season, including two DFB-Pokal appearances.

Neuer praised Urbig, saying, “It’s a lot of fun working together in our goalkeeper group. He’s got support from Sven Ulreich and me”

Urbig’s development is crucial, as Bayern aims to ensure a smooth transition when Neuer eventually retires. Coach Vincent Kompany has confirmed Neuer will start against Union Berlin, with Urbig on the bench.

Neuer’s contract talks are expected to resume in the second half of the season, with Bayern reportedly willing to offer an extension, potentially with a pay cut. The club values Neuer’s experience and leadership, but also prioritizes preparing for life after him.

Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, has emphasized the importance of continuity, stating they’re prepared for Neuer’s eventual departure. With Urbig emerging as a strong candidate, Bayern is positioning itself for long-term success.
