Liverpool manager insists he can “feel the trust” from the club hierarchy

Liverpool boss Arne Slot is “not worried” about losing his job despite the downward spiral that continued with a damaging 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven, the manager has said.

The loss at Anfield was his side’s ninth in 12 matches across all competitions and followed heavy league defeats to Manchester City and Nottingham Forest.

Results have dropped the Premier League champions to the bottom half of the league table and 13th place in Europe, in danger of missing out on an automatic top-eight finish.

Despite pressure, Slot played down suggestions that his position is under threat and said he is fully focused on fixing things.

“I’m not worried,” said Slot. “What I mean with that is that my focus is on other things than worrying about my own position. I try to analyse, try to help the players as much as I can.

“So again, I need to do better and that’s what I’m trying to do every single day to improve the team and that is where my main focus is.”

The manner of the defeat only added to the unease around the club. It was the first time in more than three decades that Liverpool had conceded three or more goals in three consecutive matches.

The way Slot’s players slacked off for the goals was also concerning, from Virgil van Dijk’s ludicrous hand ball to concede a fifth-minute penalty to both the captain and Ibrahima Konate getting turned inside out by Ricardo Pepi for PSV’s third.

Slot maintained that he had support from the club’s hierarchy to turn things around.

“Yes, not in a sense that they tell me every single minute: ‘We support you’, but we talk a lot,” said Slot. “If we are winning, if we are losing, they’re helpful to me, to the team. In those conversations, I feel the trust.”
