Club not in the financial position to pull off another expensive signing mid-season after spending £200m+ in the summer

Manchester United are considering a budget-friendly midfield signing in January, with Wolves’ Joao Gomes among the players being monitored.

United are expected to be quiet in the winter window. The club spent upwards of £200m on new signings in the summer and are therefore not in the financial position to pull off another expensive signing in January.

However, there is an understanding that a midfield addition could further improve Amorim’s squad this season. The club will therefore keep an eye out for low-cost options that can offer something positive to the team, even if on a temporary basis, according to Mail Sport.

United expect to go fully into the market next summer. Players linked with a possible move to the club next summer include Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller. None is a realistic option in January.

Despite the mention of Gomes, it does not seem like he can be an easy signing by any stretch of the imagination. The Brazilian signed a five-year contract with Wolves in the summer. The Black Country club are also in a relegation battle this season, which would make it difficult to sell players mid-season.

Nottingham Forest will demand a fee in excess of £100m for Elliot Anderson, who has been extensively linked to Manchester United.

Anderson joined Forest from Newcastle in July 2024 for £35m, but the club are aiming to make a vast profit with the player’s stock rising rapidly due to a string of eye-catching performances.
