Ex-Barcelona player insists players are opposed to lack of communication and structure, not the idea itself

Former Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets says he supports the idea of taking official La Liga matches abroad but insists any move must be based on transparent planning and agreement across the sport.

Now playing for Inter Miami in the United States, Busquets said La Liga players were not opposed in principle to regular-season fixtures being staged abroad. But he criticised the lack of adequate communication or clear structure.

“I think a lot of things are getting mixed up,” said Busquets. “I don’t think the players themselves are closed off.

“What they want is for the conditions to be clear, for negotiations to take place, for them to know what will happen in the future, just like anyone else.”

La Liga has long explored the possibility of exporting competitive fixtures, particularly to North America. That dream had appeared likely to become a reality this December, with Villarreal and Barcelona lined up for a match in Miami, before the plan collapsed amid backlash from supporters, players and club officials in Spain.

Busquets said that, in future, La Liga must avoid making decisions unilaterally.

“It can’t be that they choose two teams arbitrarily without anyone knowing the conditions or what will happen in the coming years,” said Busquets.

“Expanding the league abroad is good, as long as everyone agrees and it’s good for everyone and for growth.”
