The Portuguese Football Federation is preparing to appeal to FIFA to reduce Cristiano Ronaldo’s red card  suspension ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is fighting to keep Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch at the start of the 2026 World Cup.

Ronaldo was sent off against the Republic of Ireland, his first-ever red card in 226 international appearances, and now faces a possible suspension.

FPF president Pedro Proenca is leading the charge, arguing that Ronaldo’s suspension should be limited to one match. They’re citing three main points: the hostile environment created by Ireland’s coach, the incident itself, and Ronaldo’s impeccable disciplinary record.

The FPF claims Ireland’s coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, created a “clearly and demonstrably hostile environment” around Ronaldo with his comments about influencing referees. They’re also highlighting that Ronaldo was held inside the box and reacted out of frustration.

Ronaldo’s clean record is also being emphasized, with the FPF pointing out that this is his first sending off in over 200 national team appearances. “It’s truly remarkable and demonstrates his consistently exemplary conduct,” they said.

If the suspension is more than one match, Ronaldo could miss crucial World Cup games. Portugal’s next match is against Armenia on Sunday, and a win will secure their spot in the 2026 World Cup.

The FPF is confident in their arguments and hopes FIFA will agree to reduce the suspension. FIFA will review the case and make a decision within three weeks. Until then, Ronaldo’s World Cup future hangs in the balance.
