Rayo Vallecano 0-0 Real Madrid: Los Blancos fail to score for second successive game on difficult night at Vallecas

After a midweek Champions League defeat to Liverpool, Real Madrid were looking for a response but it was not to be found against local rivals Rayo Vallecano.

Xabi Alonso’s side endured a frustrating afternoon to see the game end in a goalless draw. They created few clear chances against a disciplined and determined Vallecano side.

Goalkeeper Augusto Batalla made several crucial saves to deny Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham, while Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde both went close but failed to find the net. Raul Asencio spurned a golden opportunity for Madrid while Jorge de Frutos could only hit the side netting for Rayo.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has returned from injury but started on the bench yet again, coming on for the final 15 minutes as Madrid pushed for a late winner. The manager said after the game that the Englishman still needs “a bit more time”.

Alonso’s team have now failed to score in back-to-back games for the first time this season, after losing 1-0 to Liverpool.

“It’s still November, there’s a long way to go,” said Alonso. “We have to be demanding of ourselves, but also patient.”
