Phil Foden scored twice and Erling Haaland struck against his former club as Manchester City eased to a 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium.
Foden produced two composed finishes on either side of Haaland’s goal to give City full control before Rayan Cherki added a late fourth. Dortmund’s Waldemar Anton briefly reduced the deficit midway through the second half, but the hosts were rarely troubled.
The victory leaves Pep Guardiola’s side well placed to qualify from the league phase, sitting on 10 points after four matches. Meanwhile, Dortmund remain on seven and drop to 14th.
City started brightly and took the lead in the 22nd minute when Foden collected a pass from Tijjani Reijnders and drove a low shot beyond Gregor Kobel from the edge of the box.
Seven minutes later, Haaland doubled the advantage with a typically ruthless finish after good work from Jeremy Doku. It was his 27th goal of the season in all competitions.
Foden struck again early in the second half, before Dortmund pulled one back through Anton’s close-range finish from a free-kick, though it was difficult to have hope that it was anything more than a consolation. Substitute Rayan Cherki ultimately scored in stoppage time to add gloss to the scoreline.
