Inter Miami say they are “concerned” the league is re-refereeing an incident already judged by match officials
Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez has been handed a one-game ban for violent conduct, after the Uruguayan forward kicked Nashville’s Andy Najar during a match.
The incident occurred during the second half of Miami’s game against Nashville, which they lost 2-1.
In a statement released on Wednesday, MLS said: “The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended Inter Miami CF forward Luis Suarez for one match and fined Suarez an undisclosed amount under Disciplinary Committee Parameter 3 for violent conduct in the 71st minute of Inter Miami’s match against Nashville SC on November 1.
“Suarez will serve his one-match suspension on November 8 during Miami’s match against Nashville SC.”
The player’s action went unpunished at the time, with a freekick not even awarded. However, league rules allow a disciplinary committee to review and sanction offenses that go unpunished during a match.
This is not the first time Suarez has received a ban for an offence on the pitch this season. The 38-year-old was handed a three-match ban in August for spitting on a member of staff on the opposing team when Inter Miami faced Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final.
Responding to the ban, Miami said: “Inter Miami CF accepts and respects the decision made by the MLS Disciplinary Committee.
“At the same time, the club wishes to express its concern about the precedent set by re-refereeing a play that had already been judged by the match officials and VAR, and its confidence that the same standard will be applied in the future to all on-field situations, in any match and involving any team.”
