Player says teammate “a great professional” despite constant controversy around him
Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde has backed teammate Lamine Yamal, warning critics the young forward deserves more appreciation for what he has achieved at such a young age.
Yamal was back on the scoresheet on Sunday as Barcelona beat Elche 3-1 to stay within reach of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
It was a welcome performance after the teenager’s form and conduct off the pitch have drawn unwanted attention in recent weeks, particularly in the clásico when some of his comments before the game had resulted in a brawl between players from both clubs at full-time.
“It’s true that he’s always in the spotlight, but I think Lamine is a great professional despite his young age,” said Balde.
“What he is doing at only 18 years old is incredible. Sometimes people don’t appreciate what he does as they should. At his age, what he’s doing can’t be described in words.”
Yamal has been managing discomfort from pubalgia since returning from international duty with Spain last month, and his manager Hansi Flick confirmed the issue is still a concern.
“He has to manage his injury,” Flick said. “He has to train, undergo treatment. He’s doing that.
“I can’t say the injury is over – it comes and goes. And he has to manage it.”
