Victory helps Los Verdiblancos remain within touching distance of top four
Real Betis forward Antony believes his hard work in training is paying off after delivering a standout performance in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Mallorca that kept his side firmly in the hunt for a Champions League place.
The Brazilian winger scored twice and assisted another in a blistering first half at the Benito Villamarin, earning man-of-the-match honours as Betis produced one of their most outstanding displays of the season.
“Very happy with the result – it’s very important,” said Antony. “We knew how important today’s match was because losing the three points at home against Atletico was very tough.
“Now, winning at home is very important for our confidence. We’re moving on. I’m very happy with the two goals and the assist. It’s a shame I didn’t get the third, but that’s part of the game.”
Antony opened the scoring inside 10 minutes before doubling his side’s advantage shortly after the half-hour. Minutes later, he set up Abde Ezzalzouli for the third, practically finishing the game off before half-time.
The Brazilian came close to completing a hat-trick in the second half but failed to beat goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom 1-v-1.
“Yes, I had plenty of space and I controlled it, but the goalkeeper did very well too,” said Antony. “I think he touched it with his fingertips, but the most important thing is the three points and to keep this up with confidence.”
The 25-year-old’s brace against Mallorca took his tally to five goals in nine matches in all competitions for Betis. But it also meant that he has now scored four goals in his last three league appearances, after his brace against Villareal last month. His form is a major boost for Betis’ European ambitions.
The player said it was the reward for “training a lot”.
“I practice finishing every day and it’s not luck, it’s training, it’s work,” Antony said. “I feel very happy to score two goals.”
Antony joined Betis permanently from Manchester United in the summer after impressing during a six-month loan spell. He reiterated that he feels a deep connection with the club and its supporters.
“Everyone knows the desire I had in my heart [to join the club permanently],” said Antony. “I am very happy here, I am at home, I am playing a lot for all the fans and all of you.”
The victory helped Betis recover from their 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid last week and keeps them close to the top four places.
“It was very tough losing to Atletico at home, and that’s why it was so important to win today and be up there,” Antony said. “We have many games ahead of us. We have to be patient, take it one game at a time, and keep moving up.”
