Head coach dismissed after run of 10 games without a win

Academy coaches James Collins and Richard Walker will take temporary charge while Wolves search for a permanent manager, after the Premier League club sacked head coach Vitor Pereira on Sunday.

Collins and Walker had been in charge of the Under-21 and Under-18 sides respectively.

Pereira was sacked following a dismal run of form capped by Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Fulham. The Portuguese was appointed last December after Gary O’Neil’s exit and managed to keep the club up, steering them to a 16th-place finish.

But this campaign has seen none of that progress, with Wolves losing eight and winning none of their first ten Premier League matches.

The Portuguese manager was informed of his dismissal on Sunday morning. His contract has a break clause that prevents him from receiving a full payout.

“Vítor and his team worked tirelessly for Wolves and helped guide us through a challenging period last season, for which we are grateful,” executive chairman Jeff Shi said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, the start to this season has been a disappointment and, despite our strong desire to give the head coach time and matches to find an improvement, we have reached a point where we must make a change.”

In a message posted to Instagram after his dismissal, Pereira wrote: “It has been a privilege to manage Wolverhampton Wanderers and experience unique moments with this club and its supporters.

“I would like to thank the club’s owners for their trust, the players for their hard work and commitment over these months, and all the staff for making me feel part of the family.

“I wish the club all the best for the rest of the season.”
