Return of the duo a major boost for injury-hit club

Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo are both in contention for Sunday’s La Liga clash with Elche, according to Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.

Lewandowski has been sidelined since picking up a muscle injury during Poland’s October internationals, missing Barcelona’s last three matches. Olmo, who suffered a similar setback while on duty with Spain, has also been absent in the same period.

On Saturday, Flick confirmed to reporters that both players had returned to full training and could feature against Elche.

“I really liked the last two training sessions,” Flick said. “We also have Olmo and Lewandowski back, although we’ve lost Pedri. We’ll see how Lewy and Olmo are tomorrow, and then we’ll decide for the rest of the matches.”

Pedri’s latest injury is another blow for Barcelona, who have suffered a host of injuries in the last few months. They remain without Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Andreas Christensen, Gavi and Raphinha.

Goalkeeper Joan Garcia is edging closer to a return after having knee surgery. Flick described the 24-year-old’s recovery as positive but urged patience.

“We’re taking it day by day. He’s training and doing very well, he looks good,” Flick said. “He’s on the right track, but we mustn’t put pressure on him.”

Flick also addressed the fitness of 18-year-old winger Lamine Yamal, who has been managing a recurring groin problem.

“Some days he feels some discomfort and pain,” Flick said. “He is working hard and has improved. He is progressing well.”
