Midfielder could return after the international break in November

Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Pedri has suffered a muscle tear in his left leg, ruling him out for several weeks.

The 22-year-old had been due to miss the fixture against Elche through suspension after being sent off late in Sunday’s clásico, but he will now miss more games after scans revealed that he also sustained an injury.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Barcelona said: “The first-team player Pedri has suffered a rupture of the distal biceps femoris in his left leg. The approximate recovery time will depend on the progress of the injury.”

According to AS, the midfielder could be sidelined for up to three weeks, though early reports from Catalan radio outlet RAC1 had suggested he was facing four to five weeks out.

Sources say he could return after the international break in November, possibly in time for the home game against Athletic Club on 22 November 22.

The injury is another major blow to Hansi Flick, whose squad has been stretched thin by a series of absences. Barcelona are already without Gavi, Raphinha, Dani Olmo and Joan Garcia, while Jules Kounde, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres have all been managing fitness issues in recent weeks.

Pedri has been one of Flick’s most relied-upon players this season, starting every competitive match across all competitions and amassing more than 1,000 minutes.
