Youngster was signed in the summer but has dropped to second choice after the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma
Pep Guardiola believes James Trafford is an impressive talent and will become hugely important for club and country despite his recent demotion.
The 23-year-old was re-signed by Manchester City from Burnley in the summer in a deal worth £31m, of which City paid £27m.
He began the campaign as first choice but after a a series of unconvincing performances he was dropped and the club brought in Gianluigi Donnarumma instead.
Trafford has not featured since the former Paris Saint-Germain No 1 made his debut for City.
Donnarumma has also further entrenched himself with a string of impressive saves that have earned City vital points, so he is unlikely to be dislodged any time soon.
Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Swansea is an opportunity for Trafford to get some much needed game time.
Guardiola said: “All I can say is we are delighted he is here.
“One of the reasons we want to go through in this competition [the Carabao Cup] is because everyone has to be ready if we need them in the Premier League or Champions League.”
“We have an incredible keeper – for England, sooner or later, he will be the one.”
Asked whether the youngster is learning from Donnarumma, Guardiola said: “I am pretty sure Gigi learns from James and James learns from Gigi. The goalkeepers are always connected.”
