Danny Welbeck admitted Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United were “the best side we’ve faced in a while” after Brighton’s 4-2 defeat at Old Trafford.

United endured a difficult start to the campaign that led to calls for Amorim’s dismissal, but they have now won three straight league matches in October, including a statement victory over champions Liverpool.

The win over Brighton lifted them further up the table and extended an unbeaten home run that has engendered new belief around Amorim’s project.

But the victory was also significant because Brighton had won six of their last seven Premier League games against United, stretching back to when Ole Gunnar Solksjaer was in charge.

Welbeck, who came through United’s academy and made his senior debut under Sir Alex Ferguson, returned to his former home as part of a Brighton side that were thoroughly beaten by the hour, although they attempted a late resurgence that was ultimately put down by Bryan Mbeumo’s 96th minute strike.

“It is the best [Manchester United] side we have faced in a while,” Welbeck said. “They were really organised and structured.

“They always have incredible players and [on Saturday] they really punished our mistakes. A difficult game but one we can look back on and analyse.”
