Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has praised “real personalities” in the squad for providing lift-off as Ruben Amorim’s side secured their third successive win.

Hargreaves pointed to new signing Matheus Cunha’s impact after the Brazilian scored his first goal for Manchester United in Saturday’s 4-2 win over Brighton.

“When you have players like Matheus Cunha who have a real personality… I just love the way he talks and plays,” said Hargreaves. “Cunha and Mbeumo along with Bruno Fernandes are guys that you can rely on and trust.”

Cunha was among three big-money signings as United completely overhauled their frontline in the summer. Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko also arrived from Brentford and RB Leipzig respectively. All three have impressed as United seek to banish the dismal performances of the past year.

United’s win against Brighton continued an upturn in form after losses to Grimsby, Brentford and Manchester City had piled immense pressure on Amorim, the Portuguese facing questions over his future less than a year since his arrival from Sporting CP.

“I don’t think the performances [over the past three games] have been amazing but the results speak for themselves,” said Hargreaves.

“If you think back to the first game of the season against Arsenal, that was a good performance but they somehow lost the game. The results are the most important thing.

“Manchester United are scoring goals and look dangerous. I would say they’re conceding more than they would like – 14 is a lot after nine games.

But I like the look of the team and the direction they’re going in. The goalkeeper [Senne Lammens] has made a difference as well.”
