AC Milan’s Rafael Leao scored early, but Pisa fought back to lead 2-1 before Zachary Athekame’s last-gasp leveller rescued a point for the Rossoneri.

It was a nervy night at San Siro as AC Milan scraped a 2-2 draw against Pisa.

Rafael Leao got Milan off to a brilliant start with a goal inside the opening few minutes, but Pisa stunned the home crowd by roaring back with a Juan Cuadrado penalty and an M’Bala Nzola finish to go 2-1 up.

Pisa’s dominance in the second half was short-lived, as Zachary Athekame fired a long shot in off the post in the dying moments to rescue a point for the Rossoneri. The result keeps Milan top of the table, but they may yet surrender the spot depending on other results.

Massimiliano Allegri made two changes to the starting line-up compared to the team that beat Fiorentina. Koni De Winter took the place of Fikayo Tomori, who was given a rest, while Santiago Gimenez came in for Zachary Athekame.

Milan dominated possession in the early stages, but Pisa’s low block made it difficult for them to create clear-cut chances. Leao’s goal in the seventh minute was a result of a well-worked free-kick routine, and it seemed to be the turning point in the game.

However, Pisa fought back strongly in the second half, and Cuadrado’s penalty in the 57th minute was a turning point. Milan pushed hard for an equalizer, but Nzola’s goal in the 86th minute seemed to have sealed the win for Pisa.

Athekame’s late leveller was a welcome relief for Milan, and it was a fitting reward for his persistence. The 20-year-old had come on as a substitute and made an immediate impact, firing home a long shot to rescue a point for his team.

Milan will be happy to have picked up a point against a resilient Pisa side. However, they will be disappointed to have surrendered a lead and had to fight hard for a draw.
