Defending champions PSG scored seven goals in a thrilling 7-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen, taking the top spot in the Champions League table.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has taken the top spot in the Champions League table with a thrilling 7-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
The defending champions were reduced to 10 men in the first half, but they still managed to score four goals, taking a 4-1 lead into halftime.
William Pacho gave PSG the lead with a seventh-minute header, and Desire Doue scored a brace, including a low curling effort in the 45th minute. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also scored, lashing the ball into the top corner off the post in the 44th minute.
Bayer Leverkusen had a chance to pull one back, but Alex Grimaldo’s penalty hit the post in the 25th minute. The hosts’ captain Robert Andrich was sent off eight minutes later for elbowing Desire Doue, and Illia Zabarnyi was also shown a red card for a foul on Christian Kofane.
In the second half, Nuno Mendes extended PSG’s lead, and Aleix Garcia scored his second goal, a stunning long-range shot into the top corner.
However, Garcia’s celebrations were muted, and it wasn’t the start of a fightback. Substitutes Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha completed the rout for PSG.
The win takes PSG to the top of the table, and they have maintained their perfect record in the Champions League this season. Bayer Leverkusen, on the other hand, has suffered its first loss under Kasper Hjulmand.
PSG’s next challenge will be to maintain their winning streak and stay at the top of the table.
