Ex-England midfielder says the club should have signed a midfielder over a second No 10
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has said the club are struggling in part because their flawed summer recruitment strategy has left the team short in key areas and forced Bruno Fernandes to play out of position.
United spent more than £200m on a new front line during the window, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko. But they failed to strengthen in central midfield, which Hargreaves believes has made Ruben Amorim’s job a lot harder than it should have been this season.
“Bruno is their best player by a country mile then they go and sign two No 10s to play in his position, and he has to play as a defensive midfield player almost,” said Hargreaves.
“I appreciate you needed more goals – they probably thought more goals will get us higher up the table than say a world class goalkeeper.
“But actually, you have the best No 10 in the division – along with Cole Palmer – and you drop him deeper because you want someone to play through midfield because you have Cunha and Mbeumo.
“So why didn’t you just sign a central midfield player to play there and let Bruno do his thing with Cunha? Then sign a goalkeeper. It would have fixed a lot of issues.”
