The Brazilian’s contract runs until 2026 but the club have an option to extend for a further year
Manchester United are open to keeping Casemiro beyond this season, but the Brazilian midfielder would need to agree to a significant pay cut.
Casemiro is under contract until June 2026, when he will be 34. United have an option to extend for a further year, but they will have to decide whether to exercise it.
The club have been steadily reducing their wage bill following the departures of high earners such as David De Gea, Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford. Casemiro’s current salary, among the highest at the club, has also become a sticking point.
The Brazilian was on the fringes for a large part of the 2024-25 season. He has re-established himself as a key starter for Ruben Amorim this season, but United have a major midfield rebuild planned next summer.
A deal for Carlos Baleba was explored last summer but the Cameroonian was unavailable. There have been links to several other talented midfielders, including Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
United’s target list is unknown for now, but the kind of aggressive approach to the market that saw them completely rebuild their frontline last summer is expected.
As a result, the club have reservations about continuing to pay a significant sum to a player of Casemiro’s age, who is likely to play only a bit-part role were his contract to be extended next year.
They would prefer to trigger the one-year extension clause with a lower base salary, and include performance-related bonuses.
