Manchester United captain has missed two out of three this season

Bruno Fernandes has admitted he needs to work on his penalty-taking technique, following the Manchester United captain’s recent struggles from the penalty spot.

The Portugal international has missed two of his three attempts this season, both of which cost United crucial points in the league.

Fernandes has been one of the most reliable figures from the spot in the Premier League since his arrival from Sporting CP in 2020.

“This season, out of three, I ended up missing two,” said Fernandes. “I don’t want to miss any of them. It’s something I need to study better. I’ll always do it with full conviction because there’s a coach who trusts me.”

Fernandes first missed against Fulham in August, throwing away United’s chance to go 1-0 up in the first half. The Red Devils would eventually score but ended up drawing the game 1-1.

The United captain then scored one against Burnley to earn his side three points at the death, before missing another against Brentford when his side had the opportunity to draw level. United ended up losing 3-1.

Fernandes has come under intense scrutiny this season, ironically after opting to reject a highly lucrative move to Saudi Arabia in the summer and stay at the club. The Portuguese made it clear he is ready to give his all to help the team turn its fortunes around.

“I feel good in Manchester,” said Fernandes. “I love the pressure. It means the goal is bigger, and I’m a person who enjoys challenges.”
