Spain to conduct tests and determine extent of midfielder’s problem

Barcelona are facing another injury hit after midfielder Dani Olmo suffered an injury while on international duty with Spain.

The 27-year-old was forced to leave training on Friday morning after feeling pain in his calf, according to reports in Spain.

He is expected to undergo medical tests to determine the extent of the problem, but his involvement in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Georgia now appears unlikely.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed Olmo’s discomfort in his pre-match press conference, saying: “Olmo hasn’t trained all week. He arrived feeling tired, with some discomfort.

“Today he didn’t feel well, so we told him to stop training. We’ll see what happens with Dani. We’ll wait for the medical report.”

The injury comes at a difficult time for Barcelona, who are already without several key players. Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Fermin Lopez, Joan Garcia and Gavi are all sidelined.

Olmo had only recently regained a starting spot in Hansi Flick’s side following Lopez’s absence, and if he is out for some time it could leave the manager seriously short of attacking options after the international break.

Barcelona lost 4-1 to Sevilla before the break, in a match where the Catalan side was missing up to three would-be starters in attack.
