Centre-back joined the national team camp earlier in the week but missed Tuesday’s training due to discomfort

Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen has been ruled out of Spain’s World Cup qualifiers through injury, with Aymeric Laporte called up in his place.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Wednesday that Huijsen was withdrawn from Luis de la Fuente’s squad after scans revealed a muscle problem.

The 20-year-old had joined the national team camp earlier in the week but missed Tuesday’s training session due to discomfort.

In a statement the RFEF said: “Medical examinations conducted on Wednesday confirmed a muscle injury, of which Real Madrid has been informed, prompting his withdrawal from the squad. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

Huijsen’s absence comes as a blow for De la Fuente, who had included the youngster in his squad following an impressive start to life at Real Madrid under Xabi Alonso.

The highly-rated centre-back moved to the Spanish capital from Bournemouth in a £50m deal last summer. He has already established himself in both Madrid’s and Spain’s squad, playing for the latter in the Nations League, which they lost to Portugal in the final.

Spain sit top of qualifying group E with six points from two matches. They face Georgia and Bulgaria this international break.
