Manager calls for “momentum” going into their next games

Ruben Amorim said Manchester United’s players showed they still want him in charge with Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Under pressure after a poor start to the season, Amorim watched goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko secure a comfortable victory at Old Trafford as United remained in control to secure their first clean sheet of the campaign. The result lifted the club to the top half of the Premier League table, six points away from leaders Arsenal.

“I saw today that I know the players want to do their best and I know they don’t want to change the coach,” Amorim said.

“But like I said [to the players] during this week, ‘I will kill myself to do anything in every transition’. They need to show that with their actions.

“Sometimes when we look at our team I know for sure that when we see the games in the end they know sometimes we can do better. I feel it during the week but we need to show it on the pitch.”

Before victory at Sunderland Amorim’s United had gone 33 Premier League games with 17 losses and only nine wins. The defeat at Brentford was particularly discouraging and pundits and supporters began to call for his sack.

Saturday’s win has lifted spirits but Amorim will have to wait until the international break before attempting what has eluded him so far in his United tenure – winning back-to-back Premier League games.

Amorim said: “There is no momentum with our team. We know what happens when we win one game, the frustration is not to see the same team at home and away.

“If we cannot play well, we must stop the opposition playing well and that’s the way a big team plays during the season, so that is the big frustration.”
