Club to wait and assess their options based on player performances and finances towards the end of the season

Barcelona are in no hurry to decide whether Robert Lewandowski will extend his stay beyond the end of this season, according to sporting director Deco.

The 37-year-old’s contract expires in 2026, but he remains central to Hansi Flick’s plans and has expressed a willingness to continue at the club if he feels physically capable of performing at the top level.

Sporting director Deco urged patience over any talks, insisting both the club and player will address the issue at the right time.

“We have to take it slowly and not discuss it publicly,” Deco said. “Lewandowski is smart enough to know the place and timing to talk about this when the time is right.”

Lewandowski joined Barcelona in a €50m transfer from Bayern Munich in 2022. In just over three seasons, he has played over 150 games for the club and scored more than 100 goals, while helping the Catalans win two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey, and bagging the individual Pichichi prize.

The striker has consistently spoken about his drive to compete at the highest level, but any extensions at the club will be carefully weighed given their current financial challenges.

Deco has similarly pointed out that any permanent deals for on-loan forward Marcus Rashford will be made much later in the season, suggesting that the club’s policy is to wait and assess their options based on player performances and their financial standing towards the end of the season.

Flick said: “A decision will be made, but we’re not talking about that now. These decisions aren’t for now. Now it’s time to focus on the upcoming games.”
