Manager says goalkeeper “99 per cent” certain to miss Saturday’s game but scan required for forward

Liverpool will be without goalkeeper Alisson Becker for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea after he suffered an injury during the 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in Istanbul, manager Arne Slot has confirmed.

The Brazil international was forced off early in the second half and replaced by second choice Giorgi Mamardashvili. Head coach Arne Slot confirmed post-match that Alisson would not be fit for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

“Alisson felt something when he sprinted back,” said Slot. “Normally when a player sprints back and feels something and goes to the floor and doesn’t come back to the pitch, then I fear the worst and that is what happened with Alisson.

“He will not be able to play Saturday, that is 99.9 per cent.”

Alisson has endured regular injury problems in recent seasons. Last season he missed over 30 games through injury for club and country combined. In the 2023-24 campaign he also missed more than two months with a hamstring problem.

The evening brought more concern for Slot after striker Hugo Ekitike also limped off with a muscle problem. The French forward will be assessed ahead of the Chelsea game, but his availability remains uncertain.

“Hugo felt something when he had to reach for the ball when we were trying to force something,” Slot said.

“After the game, players feel ‘Ah it is not too bad’ but it is different when you have to make a sprint. Let’s see how he is for the weekend.”
