Club captain confident the team can quickly get back to winning form
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk urged his teammates to cut out errors and show greater consistency after the 1-0 Champions League defeat to Galatasaray compounded a difficult week for the Premier League leaders.
Victor Osimhen’s first-half penalty proved decisive in Istanbul, where Liverpool also saw goalkeeper Alisson and forward Hugo Ekitike subbed off due to injury.
The result followed Saturday’s league defeat at Crystal Palace, marking just the time under Arne Slot that Liverpool have lost consecutive matches.
“I hate losing,” said Van Dijk. “There shouldn’t be panic, but there should be definitely improvement needed.
“I think it was a big step up in terms of the willingness, the hard work that we put in from the weekend, but that was not really too difficult because the weekend was just bad.
“We have to convert chances. Don’t give a penalty away and don’t make stupid mistakes at times. It’s far too easy to say these things than to actually make it happen but it’s a process and we have to keep going.”
The Liverpool captain was confident that his side can get back into winning form, pointing out that they have had several good moments this season already.
“I think we have showed it already in many games this season but we haven’t shown it for the full 90 minutes yet unfortunately,” said Van Dijk.
“It is absolutely normal and nowadays you don’t get the time from the outside world so you have to be strong mentally.”
