Forward has moved on from recent suspension and is eager to bounce back

Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike is not worried about the prospect of vying for a place in the side with £125m signing Alexander Isak.

The French forward has made a bright start to life at Anfield following his summer transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt, having scored five goals in his first seven appearances.

Record signing Isak joined the club having missed pre-season and the first month of the campaign due to the events surrounding his transfer, allowing Ekitike unchallenged game time.

But with Isak now close to full fitness, Ekitike faces serious competition in Liverpool’s attack. However, the France international won’t shy away from it.

“We play at such a big club,” said Ekitike. “They cannot have only one striker, so it is good he is here. I still have a lot of things to improve and learn.

“It is for the coach to decide who plays. It’s not up to me. I played with two strikers before and one striker, so I can do a lot of things, so if we have to play together, I can do that.”

The forward also said he has moved on from his recent suspension and is ready to help Liverpool respond in the Champions League against Galatasaray on Tuesday night.

Liverpool travelled to a difficult ground in Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace last weekend, but Ekitike was not in the squad after receiving two needless yellow cards in the Carabao Cup against Southampton. In his absence the Reds experienced their first defeat in the Premier League this season.

“It wasn’t smart,” Ekitike said of his red card. “I felt disappointed to watch the boys from home, but I apologised to everyone already.

“That kind of thing won’t happen again, so I move on and focus on football.”
