Manager will be judged by ability to meet season target

Ruben Amorim remains firmly in charge at Manchester United, despite growing rumours of an impending sack.

United’s 3-1 loss at Brentford on Saturday was Amorim’s 17th league defeat in 33 Premier League games, and his third out of six so far this season. The result has intensified scrutiny of the 40-year-old, but there is no indication from the club that his position is under immediate threat.

Sources at the club have rejected claims that United are looking at other managers, despite reports of interest in figures like Xavi, Laurent Blanc or Gareth Southgate.

Southgate was one of the options internally discussed before Erik ten Hag’s departure last year, when former sporting director Dan Ashworth was still at the club. But there is no basis in claims of any meeting with the former England manager now.

It is understood United will not have a knee-jerk reaction regarding Amorim, with the club willing to give him time within reason to turn things around.

The club’s target for Amorim this season is thought to be European football and he will be judged by his ability to deliver that by the end of the season.

However, poor results along the course of the season could also determine whether or not that target would be achievable.
