Right-back joins Alexander-Arnold for an extended spell on the sidelines

Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal is set to miss up to four weeks after sustaining a calf injury in Saturday’s 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The 33-year-old full-back was forced off just after the hour mark at the Metropolitano. He has now been diagnosed with a problem to the soleus muscle in his right leg, as confirmed by the club on Sunday.

While Madrid did not provide a recovery timeline, reports from Spain suggest Carvajal is expected to be out for at least a month.

The setback comes only two months after Carvajal returned from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for most of last season.

He had featured in seven of Madrid’s eight games across all competitions so far this campaign, providing strong competition to new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

Alexander-Arnold is also out for Xabi Alonso’s side, with the Englishman expected to miss between six to eight weeks with a hamstring injury. It means Madrid now have no specialist option at right-back.
