Crystal Palace 2-1 Liverpool: Oliver Glasner’s side end the champions’ perfect start to the season

Liverpool saw their perfect start to the Premier League season ended in dramatic fashion at Selhurst Park, as Eddie Nketiah scored a stoppage-time winner to hand the laurels to Crystal Palace and manager Oliver Glasner.

Palace struck first inside 10 minutes after the champions had a slow start. Tyrick Mitchell and Yeremy Pino combined down the left to force a corner, and then from Daichi Kamada’s delivery, Marc Guehi challenged Ryan Gravenberch at the far post and the Liverpool midfielder’s misdirected header dropped into the six-yard box, where Ismaila Sarr finished emphatically.

Liverpool created a few chances to respond but were denied by Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson. At the other end, Alisson was far busier trying to keep the away side in the game, making vital saves against, Yeremy Pino, Daniel Munoz and Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Arne Slot’s team remained disjointed at the back, with Ibrahima Konate struggling against Palace’s movement. The home side should have extended their lead before the break, but Mateta failed to convert two good opportunities.

Liverpool then attempted their old trick and equalised with three minutes left. Federico Chiesa met a loose ball in the area and volleyed past Henderson, and it looked like a comeback was not out of the picture for the champions with three minutes left to play. But substitute Nketiah then stepped in and Palace had the last word.
