Defender has consistently maintained his innocence and is “confident” he can defend himself in court
Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio will face trial over allegations that he shared a sexually explicit video without consent, a Spanish court has confirmed.
The 22-year-old, who was part of Madrid’s youth setup at the time of the alleged incident in June 2023, is one of four defendants. The other three are his former youth teammates, who are accused of filming and distributing videos of two women during a night out at a beach club on the island.
Asencio did not take part in the filming but is accused of asking for the footage and later showing it to another person.
A court in Gran Canaria confirmed in May that it had concluded a preliminary investigation into the incident and passed the case to prosecutors, who would decide whether to proceed with a trial.
The decision to bring the case to trial has now been made. Prosecutors argue that Asencio’s alleged actions of requesting and then sharing the footage constitute offences against privacy under the Spanish criminal code. They are seeking a prison sentence of two and a half years and financial compensation of €5,000 for each of the victims.
One of the women has withdrawn her accusation against Asencio, but the other one, who is a minor, continues to accuse him. Both have accused the other three players.
Asencio has consistently denied wrongdoing. In a statement earlier this year, he said: “I have not participated in any behaviour that violated the sexual freedom of any woman, much less of minors. I maintain full confidence in the courts and will continue to defend myself.”
