Club have stated they intend to appeal the decision to the federation’s appeals committee
Real Madrid have had an appeal to overturn Dean Huijsen’s red card from last weekend’s win at Real Sociedad rejected, with the Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) disciplinary committee confirming the defender will serve a one-match ban.
Huijsen was dismissed on minute 32 at Anoeta after bringing down Mikel Oyarzabal, who was running through on goal. The referee judged the foul to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Madrid argued the challenge did not meet that threshold, pointing out that Huijsen was not the last man as Eder Militao was running alongside him and was close enough to Oyarzabal to cover. They insist that a yellow card was the appropriate punishment.
The club’s stance has been further hardened by the statement of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), that 100 percent of the criteria for denial of clear goalscoring opportunity were not met.
However, the RFEF’s disciplinary committee rejected Madrid’s appeal on the basis that its role is not to “re-referee” matches but to apply sanctions based on the referee’s report.
Madrid have stated they intend to appeal the decision to the federation’s appeals committee.
The suspension means Huijsen will miss Saturday’s La Liga game against Espanyol on Saturday, leaving Xabi Alonso short of options in defence, especially with Antonio Rudiger and Trent Alexander-Arnold also sidelined with injuries.
The incident has added to ongoing tension between the club and Spain’s refereeing authorities. Real Madrid TV later announced that the club were preparing a report of what they assume to be refereeing mistakes against the club to be submitted to Fifa.
“Real Madrid is preparing a report with everything that has happened in these first four rounds of La Liga and what happened last season,” said the announcement.
“The dossier is going to be submitted to Fifa so that they take good note of what is happening in Spanish football with regard to refereeing.”
