Trabzonspor have completed the signing of goalkeeper Andre Onana from Manchester United on a season-long loan.

The Turkish club confirmed the deal on Wednesday, with sources indicating they will cover the Cameroon international’s full salary during his stay.

Onana’s temporary exit comes just two seasons after he joined United from Inter Milan for £47.2m. He was signed to replace United’s former No 1 David de Gea after the Spaniard began to make costly errors and was too technically limited to play out from the back.

However, Onana failed to live up to expectations, making a series of high-profile errors that made his position untenable.

The 29-year-old featured only once this season, in United’s Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town where he made two errors leading to goals for Grimsby, although he went some way towards rectifying that by making a save in the shootout.

In the league, the £4.3m signing Altay Bayindir has been preferred in goal, starting all three fixtures so far.

Onana’s departure follows the deadline day arrival of 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in an £18.2m deal. His signing means United could afford to let Onana go, even if Lammens is still considered inexperienced.

Trabzonspor finished seventh in the Turkish Super Lig last season but are currently second with four games played. The club believe Onana’s ability and experience can strengthen their push for European qualification.
