Defender’s contract runs out in the summer and sporting director Deco is currently not preparing an extension
Andreas Christensen is in the final year of his Barcelona contract with no renewal currently planned, raising the prospect of the defender leaving on a free transfer next summer.
The 29-year-old has returned to full fitness after being sidelined for much of the past two years. He has featured in two of Barcelona’s opening three league fixtures this season, coming on as a substitute against Levante and playing full time in the 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano.
He also started for Denmark in their World Cup qualifying match against Greece, scoring the second goal in the 3-0 rout in Piraeus.
Christensen’s return to form comes at a time when Barcelona face questions over their defensive depth. Inigo Martinez left the club earlier this summer, which means that Hansi Flick could lean more heavily on the former Chelsea centre-back across the season, if he can remain fit.
Sporting director Deco is currently not preparing a contract extension, according to Diario AS. That stance could change if Christensen were to stay fit and maintain his level, but for now the expectation inside the club is that he will depart at the end of the campaign.
Fitness has been Christensen’s main challenge since arriving from Chelsea in 2022. A series of muscular issues limited his involvement last season, though he made clear in the summer that he wanted to remain at the club rather than seek a transfer.
