De Jong could now miss Barcelona’s league meeting with Valencia this weekend as a precaution
Barcelona have confirmed that Frenkie de Jong has picked up a muscle injury while on international duty with the Netherlands, though the club say the problem is not considered serious.
The midfielder was substituted late on in the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw against Poland last week after feeling discomfort. He was subsequently released from the squad ahead of their following fixture against Lithuania and returned to Barcelona for further assessment.
Medical tests carried out on Monday revealed an issue with the external obturator muscle in his right leg. A club statement described the injury as “minor”, but did not provide a specific timeline for his return, instead stating that his availability will depend on how he responds to treatment.
De Jong could now potentially miss Barcelona’s league meeting with Valencia this weekend as a precaution. The club will be wary of rushing him back, particularly with the Champions League opener against Newcastle United on the horizon next week.
The Dutchman spent significant time on the sidelines in the 2023-24 season with ankle problems, but he had a much more improved campaign last season, hardly having any injury issues.
