Forward has started strongly at the Merseyside club but now faces a £125m rival for the No 9 spot
Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike says he is ready to fight for his place after the club’s record-breaking move for Alexander Isak.
The Premier League champions made Isak the most expensive signing in British football history this summer, paying Newcastle United £125m for the Sweden international.
Ekitike, who joined from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the window in a deal worth up to £79m, insists he welcomes the increased competition from Isak.
The 23-year-old has scored three goals in his first four matches for Arne Slot’s side, continuing the form that saw him net 22 goals in 48 appearances for Frankfurt last season.
“When you play for the best teams, you inevitably expect to be competing with the best players,” said Ekitike. “Isak is a player I used to watch, so seeing him arrive is a pleasure.
“It’s going to be tough competition, but I’m going to work hard to be good and perform well so that it’s just the coach’s problem.”
The two forwards are replacements for Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, who left the club this summer for Bayern Munich and Al-Hilal respectively.
