Manchester City 3-0 Sunderland: Cherki magic caps off dominant display by the Citizens
Manchester City capitalised on Arsenal’s failure against Aston Villa to close the gap to the summit to two points, after a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola’s side had been forced to survive late scares in recent wins over Leeds and Fulham, but they made sure there was no such thing against the Black Cats.
City controlled the game for most of the afternoon and were 2-0 up before Sunderland found any rhythm. Ruben Dias opened the scoring with a cracking shot from distance, and Josko Gvardiol doubled the lead minutes later when he headed in from a Phil Foden corner.
City’s third arrived midway through the second half. Rayan Cherki darted down the inside-right channel to the touchline, before cutting the ball back to deliver a rabona-style cross that Foden nodded in.
Sunderland had an even worse end to the afternoon after Luke O’Nien was sent off in stoppage time for a reckless foul on Matheus Nunes.
